Solutions to Your Horse’s Fly Problems
House and stable flies are one of the biggest problems that horse owners face.
Horses don’t care for it either! Repelling flying insects has become increasingly important especially in preventing diseases such as the West Nile Virus. In recent years, through the research of veterinary medicine, advancements have been made to control and alleviate this problem. We have found methods for solving your fly problems!
There are many ways to get rid of flies that are very effective. We have found the best products to serve you and your horses!
Feed supplements can be added to a horses ration that will break down the fly life cycle. They prevent the formation of fly larvae exoskeletons when they molt, thus causing their death. Other products include Fly Parasites,by Arbico-Organics, which are insects that actually kill flies without harming horses or humans! They are widely used and endorsed by many horse personalities. They are small wasps that actually break the life cycle of flies.
There are 3 easy steps to eliminating flies. Understanding the life cycle of flies will help you get rid of flies. The stages of a fly’s life cycle are egg, larvae, pupa and adult flies. Controlling each of these will eliminate your fly problem. The eggs can be controlled by the use of animal feed additives since they are present in manure. The fly larvae and pupa is killed by the use of feed additives and other natural methods such as beneficial insects. We can kill adult flies with sprays, granules and traps.
Spring and summer are great for outdoor entertaining. Family, friends and neighbors all enjoy the outdoor seasons! This is also the worst time of year for disease carrying flies. Keep your loved ones and pets free of this menace. Now is the time to control them! The information below will guide you through methods for killing pesky flies.

Getting rid of flies can be easy.
- Simplify with Larvastop - Dimilin is a growth regulator used in Simplify and prevents the development of stable and house flies in the manure of treated horses. Larvastop breaks the life cycle of flies, thus reducing their population by 97-100%. 1 ounce per day will treat an average size horse.
- Bugcheck – This product is an all natural supplement providing two levels of protection. It contains garlic and yeast to keep biting flies off your horses and Diatomaceous earth to detour fly breeding in manure. 1 ounce per day for 2-3 weeks and then ½ ounce per day for maintenance.
- Solitude IGR- Dramatically reduces the number of house and stable flies by preventing immature flies from developing into adults. IGR Cromazine is not an Solitude IGR
organophosphate and has safely been used in pregnant mares, stallions, foals and miniature horses since 2001. Use fly baits and other methods to control existing flies. Feed ½ ounce per day to ration regardless of the size of the animal.
- Buggzol- Buggzol combines 2 types of garlic, a dry buffer apple cider vinegar, thiamine, Diatomaceous earth and B Complex vitamins. It is very palatable. For an 1100 lb. Horse, 1-2 ounces daily for 2-4 weeks then 1 ounce daily for maintenance.
- Clitheroe’s Garlic Granules- 100% pure garlic clove dried and chopped. The health promoting properties have been scientifically proven to improve digestive, circulatory and respiratory systems. Feed 1-2 ounces daily.
- Spalding Fly Preditors- Tiny insects which are biteless and stingless to humans and horses stop pest flies by taking over the flies cocoon and kill the immature fly. Keeping the “good” fly preditor population elevated, with regular releases, the “bad” pest fly population can be nearly eradicated. Technically, fly preditors are tiny hymenopteran insects of the pteromalidae family, a family that contains many of the world’s beneficial insects. There is no known method of fly control that offers 100% eratication of pest flies. Fly preditors do not totally eliminate the fly problem but they minimize it dramatically. The Fly preditors are spread in and around manure areas once a month.
- Fly Eliminators- Also called ” Fly Parasites”, are gnat-sized parasites wasps that feed upon and breed within developing stages of manure breeding flies. They eliminate pest flies in their pupal stage while developing in the ground. They should be released every 3-4 weeks for a fly control program.
